The Eyneburg in Hergenrath

The Eyneburg in Hergenrath, Kelmis, is one of the most significant historical buildings in eastern Belgium. It is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful buildings in the Geul valley. As the River Geul flows through a rocky ravine, the medieval castle above guarantees a magnificent and unique visual experience.

According to a 19th century story, the name "Eyneburg" derives from "Emmaburg". The legend is based on the supposition that Emma, the daughter of Charlemagne, met her lover Eginhard at the castle. However, this historical connection cannot be confirmed.

The oldest parts of the castle were built in the 13th century. At this time it was owned by the knights of Eyneberghe. During the 15th century the ownership passed to the Bongaerts. Marrying into this family, the Eyneburg next came into possession of the Baron of Donraedt in the 16th century.

The original castle was severly damaged by fire in 1640, but subsequent reconstruction made it even larger and more beautiful during the following centuries. The different architectural styles connected the buildings in an asymmetric manner, resulting in notable roof constructions. The last lavish refurbishment took place in 1900 and was done by Theodor Nellessen, a draper from Aachen. He renovated the dilapidated castle by adding medieval elements, including the construction of the chapel.

In 1958, the Nellessen family sold the castle and its estate. The exceptional and rich interior, such as the paintings, furniture and china, was mostly sold off. In 1966 the castle became listed as a landmark due to a preservation order. Hergenrather Kalkwerke AG, by that time the owner, sold the whole estate into private hands in 2001. The Eyneburg was then opened to public with the goal of becoming a centre for medieval life.

Nowadays, the event calendar ranges from concerts, historical tournaments and markets. Upon request, special arrangements can be booked, such as workshops, seminars, wedding celebrations, birthday parties, company events, guided tours and much more...
